The St. Lawrence is home to many ports of varying jurisdictions: Canada Port Authorities, Transport Canada ports, private ports and municipal ports. St. Lawrence ports are key players in Canadian international trade, providing access to overseas markets.

Terminal operators play an essential cargo handling role in Québec’s ports. Private companies tranship and store the different products loaded onto and unloaded off vessels. They employ most of the port’s human resources assigned to these duties. Along the St. Lawrence and its tributaries, terminals are used for various purposes: containers, solid bulk, liquid bulk and grain.

Port statistics

  • Québec’s port network handles an average of 147 million tonnes of cargo annually.
  • 3/4 of the goods transhipped in St. Lawrence ports are international in origin
