Montreal, November 16, 2006 - More than one hundred people attended the Sodes luncheon meeting last Thursday in Montréal, which welcomed the Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Canadian Minister of Transports, Infrastructure and Communities. Minister Cannon took the opportunity to announce three initiatives designed to enhance the security of Canada's marine transportation network.

A $115 million commitment over 5 years under the Marine Security Contribution Program, which seeks to assist ports and port facilities to bear the cost of modernization and enhancing their security systems and security programs. To know more »

The two-year extension of the Marine Security Contribution Program and the broadening of its scope to cover the Canadian ferryboat fleet, which was not included in the program's initial version. To know more »

Amendments to the Marine Transportation Security Regulations, which enhance marine security by requiring port workers to agree to have their backgrounds checked under the Marine Transportation Security Clearance Program. To know more »

In his speech, Mr. Cannon also mentioned that his government is currently drawing up a national policy framework on strategic gateways and trade corridors in order to orient their future activities. His talk followed a presentation by Guy Véronneau, who took advantage of Minister Cannon's presence to state that the trade corridor is a priority for the St. Lawrence marine industry.
