Canadian shipbuilder Algoma to reduce toxic emisions from ships

Algoma Central Corp., the largest Canadian shipowner and operator of Greal Lakes vessels, plans to install feshwater exhaust gas scrubbers on six new ships. They will remove an estimated 97 per cent of the sulphur oxide emissions generated by the engines.
The six scrubber systems, costing $12 million U.S., will be supplied by the Finnish Wartsila shipbuilding and engineering group and fitted to Algoma’s Equinox class vessels under construction by Nantong Mingde Heavy Industry Co. Ltd. in China.
